Chiang Mai: let’s learn to cook Thai! 14:09:14

Hello!
So today we were up bright and early (7am) to move rooms and save a bit of money by moving into the dorm as well as go to a cookery class at a Thai Farm!
We put our bags in the dorm to fond out its a dark room with no windows or air con and 12 beds! ERM not impressed! Deal with it later!
Bus picked us up and we made our way to the Thai cooking class with not a clue what to expect!
We are on a bus with 2 Spanish, 2 chinese, 2 Belgian and 2 Australians! What a fabulous mix of people! All spoke amazing English and the banter was great!
First stop a Thai market! We got shown all the spices and produce we needed to use for the day, it was fabulous to experience a Thai food market and saw some amazingly interesting food!

We then got to the farm and split into groups. We were with the two Belgian girls and Spanish couple. They were so much fun with Benny as our leader we knew it was going to be fab!

We were to learn 5 dishes each on the day… A lot to remember! I chose to do:
Tom youm goong soup – chicken
Green Thai curry – chicken
Chicken cashew nut stir fry
Bananas in coconut milk
Phad Thai

We started off by walking the farm and picking and trying all of the produce as we learnt. Some were not the best tasting including a pesticide leaf… ERM wouldn’t eat that again! Also told about Thai bananas being small which turned into a joke on Nkosi made by Benny our guide! Hehe (very immature!)

We also learnt how to cook jasmine rice and sticky rice properly! Lots of tips from Bennys upbringing! How sweet.

The day had lots of sucessfull cooking.. amaziballs food..lots of eating and most importantly the best banter and memories!

We were very happy with our dishes! (Although for me I’m not so keen on so many bits in my food!) Especially not a fan on lemongrass! Although apparently a fab insect repellent!

Amazing day. Thank you to Benny our guide who really made it!
We got dropped back to the hotel and I couldn’t face the nasty room.  It smelt and really old people staying there… Not what we wanted.
Took our bags and headed to a hostel the two Belgian girls told us about! Julies hostel. The minute we walked in the atmosphere hit us! Loads of people talking to us and real good cost atmosphere and the private room rate half of the previous place! Amazing!
Went the room… Nice enough although air con was a blag as it is just a fan!
Not complaining though a lovely evening in Chiang mai … Went to a huge night market and then the watch Manchester united (of course) although 10om kick off is late! I thought we would be away from most of football but everywhere in Thailand is Manchester united posters and anyone who asks where your from ends up hugging Nkosi “a proper person from Manchester” everyone loves united! Don’t worry Dad… I’m still trying to fly the Tranmere rovers flag!
Anyway spent the night in great company even found cute reggae bar!

  1. Just read through your blog, with pics. Great idea. Can feel the buzz. Can your print it out and keep as diary/album? Have you been spared the stomach bug, or, had the occasional Yogurt?

    Take care,
